Southdown Motor Services

Southdown Motor Services Ltd was incorporated on the 2nd June 1915 and came about by the amalgamation of the Brighton, Hove, Preston United Omnibus Company Ltd, Worthing Motor Services Limited and the London and South Coast Haulage Company Ltd.

From the company's formation BAT (British Automobile Traction Co) had an interest in Southdown which eventually became part of tilling BAT Group in 1928.  The company bought many Leylands which were always immaculately turned out, their coaching fleet being second to none.

After a reorganisation in 1942 the company came under the control of BET( British Electric Traction) which operated approximately eleven thousand buses throughout Britain.  During the decades 1930s to 1960s, Southdown became the largest operator of buses and coaches, outside London, in the south central and east of England.

These images would be ideal for all bus enthusiats and clubs who have a special interest in Southdown Motor Services vehicles.
