East Yorkshire Motor Services

East Yorkshire Motor Services Ltd was first registered on 5th October 1926 and came about by the merging of Lee and Beaulah Ltd and Hull and District Motor Services Ltd.  The company's livery of dark blue and primrose was adopted from that used by Lee and Beaulah and graced the company's buses until National Bus Company days.

In 1942 B.E.T. ( British Electric Traction) took control of the company and it maintained strong links with Leyland Motors for many years.

The double deck fleet was very distinctive in having Gothic roofs: as a small boy on holiday in Bridlington I was astonished to see such unusual vehicles and recall asking my dad - who answered, without hesitation, all my questions relating to the game of cricket- why Bridlington buses were fitted with such strange domed shaped roofs.  He said "Well, it's like this old son, when a policeman comes off duty he can board the bus, climb the stairs to the upper deck without having to remove his helmet!!".  I didn't believe a word of it and from then on stuck to questions on cricket: any bus and coach information that I required was obtained by reading articles by Alan Townsin.

The roofs were, of course, built that way in order that the buses could negotiate the rather awkward gothic arch in the town of Beverley.

A single deck fleet was equally distinctive: many vehicles had rather old fashioned looking oval rear windows and the majority were fitted with rear entrances right up to the mid 1950s.  Some may consider this to be somewhat anachronistic, others may find it delightfully eccentric, but whatever anyone thinks the company always has great appeal and interest to many enthusiasts.

The recent series from channel 5 about East Yorkshire buses was really superb and new images of the current fleet will be added as soon as possibe.
